And I got a few really good responses, including "if you change this, it will affect so much it would be a nightmare to adjust and could really affect your player's fun." to "here are a few interesting thoughts on how to achieve something similar." And as a result, if you read through those answers, I was like "yeah, messing with this mechanic probably would be more trouble than it was worth, maybe I'll add something special but I'll leave the base alone."
